Most mental health conditions begin early in life, with over 75% starting before the age of 25. This means that a lot of young people in Canada are impacted by mental health conditions.
Mental health conditions are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors and life experiences. Having a better understanding of these causes may help us create better diagnostic tools and find better treatment options for people with these conditions.
Some groups of people are less likely to be represented in research which means that diagnostic tools and treatments may not be as likely to work for them since they were not invovled in the development of these tools. One of the goals of Pan-GEM is to increase the diversity of participants in mental health research in Canada.
We are collecting health record data to be able to look at how people's health changes over time and understanding which treatments work for people.
We are doing genomic analysis to better understand the genetic factors involved in mental health conditions and the genetics involved in medications.
We are collecting survey and health record data about life history and patient outcomes to be able to understand people's experiences having a mental health condition.
